5 Household Ingredients Perfect for Cleaning

Nothing beats saving time and money. Luckily, that’s easy to do when it comes to using household ingredients in place of store bought cleaning supplies. Try out some of these suggestions before you make a last minute run to the store.

1. Mouthwash
Sometimes washing machines can have mildew and develop a musty smell over the years. Clean and freshen your washing machine by pouring one cup of mouthwash into the machine and run a wash cycle on hot to bring it back to its glory.

Out of toilet bowl cleaner? Pour a cup of mouthwash into your toilet, let sit for 30 minutes, then scrub.

If your sink drain is a little pungent, pour one cup of mouthwash down the drain, let sit for 30 minutes, and rinse the drain with warm water.

2. Toothpaste
Toothpaste works great to clean dry erase boards, piano keys, and chrome. Gently rub toothpaste over the surface area, wipe in circular motions with a warm, wet paper towel, then wipe once more to remove any remaining substance.

3. Shaving Cream
It may be hard to believe, but foam (not the gel kind) shaving cream is a wonderful carpet stain remover. Dampen the area, spray the foam shaving cream directly onto the stain, work it in with your fingers, wipe the shaving cream away with a clean cloth, and repeat as necessary. You’ll be amazed.

4. Lemons
Lemon juice is an all-natural stain remover for clothing, cups, grout, and many other items. It can also clean your stuck-on food from the inside of your microwave with little to no effort.

Start by thinly slicing a lemon (in circles, not wedges) and place them in a microwave safe bowl with water. Any regular size bowl of water will do. Place the bowl of water and lemons in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. Let the bowl sit in the microwave another 2-3 minutes to allow the steam to loosen stuck-on food. Remove the bowl and simply wipe the microwave clean.

5. Olive Oil & Vinegar
Clean and polish your stainless steel appliances in no time.

Combine one cup of water and one cup of vinegar into a spray bottle, and shake well. Spray the solution directly to your stainless steel appliances, and wipe clean with a dry cloth. Add a few drops of olive oil to the same cloth to polish your appliances.
